  On Thursday 18 September 2025, Vincent Maertens, a 48-year-old Dutch man on holiday, drove onto the wrong side of the road at Doonglebe, Newmills, Co Donegal, causing a head-on collision in which two people, including the accused's mother-in-law, were taken to hospital. He had been visiting the Newmills Corn and Flax Mills attraction outside Letterkenny. He was initially charged with dangerous driving, and on 22 September 2025 at Letterkenny District Court the charge was reduced to careless driving under Section 52 and he was fined €200.
