latest first- Supreme Court quashes IRA membership conviction in Dublin Membership of an illegal organisation (IRA) · Co. Dublin
Vincent Banks, a man in his early 50s from Dublin 7, was arrested on 18 December 2012 as part of the investigation into the November 2012 murder of Northern Ireland prison officer David Black in Co Armagh. He was acquitted of a withholding information charge in 2014 and convicted by the Special Criminal Court in 2017 of being a member of the IRA, and was sentenced to five years in prison. The Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal before the Supreme Court agreed to hear it. In February 2022, the Supreme Court quashed his conviction, finding his arrest unlawful and the evidence insufficient to prove IRA membership beyond reasonable doubt.
