Valeriu Melnic, a 24-year-old Moldovan man, was sentenced on 20 November 2025 to ten years in prison for the manslaughter of Ion Daghi, a 39-year-old man from Moldova, at a family gathering in Sallins Park, Sallins, Co Kildare, in the early hours of 12 May 2024. Melnic, the victim's brother-in-law, was arrested at the scene and charged with murder, but a Central Criminal Court jury found him not guilty of murder and guilty of manslaughter on 22 July 2025. The judge set a headline sentence of 13 years, reduced to ten years with the final two years suspended, backdated to 15 May 2024 when Melnic went into custody.

Valeriu Melnic, a 23-year-old from Rathcoole, was involved in a road accident in County Kildare on 19 September 2020, when gardaí found he had no licence. On 4 April 2022 he was stopped in County Kildare and failed a roadside breath test. He was charged with drink-driving, careless driving, and driving with no insurance and no licence, and he pleaded guilty. On 23 May 2024 Judge Zaidan at Naas District Court jailed him, with five months for drink-driving and a further five months for careless driving, and imposed a four-year driving disqualification.
