Vaidotas Gedvilas (53), a Lithuanian national of Ashefield, Mullingar, Co Westmeath, tried to smother his sleeping wife with a cushion, doused her in barbecue fuel, set her on fire and choked her during an attack between 29 and 30 November 2024. A friend of the victim alerted gardaí the next morning, and Gedvilas was arrested but was unfit to be questioned for six hours because of intoxication. He pleaded guilty to assault causing harm and two connected counts under Section 3A of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997. On 30 January 2026 Judge Keenan Johnson at Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court jailed him for five years, after a headline sentence of nine years was reduced to six and a half years with the final 18 months suspended for five years.
