latest first- Man jailed for three years over waste offences at Naas landfill Environmental offences (waste crime) · Co. Kildare
Tony Dean, 70, a man of Woodhaven, Milltown, Dublin, was found guilty by a jury at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 14 November 2022 of two breaches of a waste management licence and of holding or recovering waste in a manner likely to cause environmental pollution at a site at Kerdiffstown, Naas, Co Kildare, between October 2003 and November 2008. The site, operated by Nephin Trading Limited, a subsidiary of Dean Waste Management Ltd, had waste reaching 116 metres in height, produced 50 cubic metres of leachate per day, and generated 188 odour complaints before a major fire broke out in January 2011. The conviction followed an EPA and An Garda Síochána investigation spanning almost 20 years, and the public clean-up cost €61.5 million. On 9 June 2023, Judge Melanie Greally sentenced Dean to three years on each of the three charges, all to run concurrently, with the final 12 months suspended.
