Gardaí stopped a vehicle at a checkpoint in Birr at 2am on the night of 5 to 6 November 2023 and found deal bags and cocaine worth €2,170 along with cash believed to be from drug sales. Tommy Ward, a 30-year-old man from Birr, was charged with possessing cocaine and possessing it for sale or supply. He pleaded guilty at Tullamore District Court in July 2024, where Judge Andrew Cody described him as a career criminal with three prior drug convictions and other offences. Ward was sentenced to six months in prison, with the judge noting he may have considered a suspended sentence had the plea been entered seven months earlier.
