Tommy Howard, 79, a man from Old Kilcullen, Co Kildare, pleaded guilty to charges of indecent assault and coercion relating to the abuse of his niece, Maeve Leahy, 46, during the mid-1980s and 1990s when she was aged three to 11. Howard, a former All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final referee, appeared before Judge Sinéad McMullen at Tullamore Circuit Court in October 2025, where the judge indicated a custodial sentence. He was remanded on continuing bail until sentencing. On 13 November 2025, Howard was sentenced at Portlaoise Circuit Court to six years and nine months in prison. The victim waived her right to anonymity to name her abuser.
