On 4 January 2020, a Hyundai van driven by Daniel Phillips, 35, pursued at high speed on the wrong side of the N24 by a Toyota Avensis driven by Michael Stanners, 41, collided with motorcyclists Maurice Fehilly, 54, and Thomas Traynor at Dromkeen, Co Limerick, while a third rider, Tom Conway, escaped serious injury. Fehilly died almost instantly, and Traynor died in 2022 after 22 operations. Phillips pleaded guilty in February 2025 to dangerous driving causing Fehilly's death and serious bodily harm to Traynor, and was sentenced in March 2025 to five years and nine months with a 10-year driving ban; Stanners was convicted by a jury of two counts of endangerment and jailed for six and a half years. In September 2026, the coroner at the inquest endorsed calls for the maximum sentence for dangerous driving causing death to be increased from 10 to 14 years.
