• Man sentenced to 18 months for attempted child sexual exploitation in Cork Rape

  Tim Bowen, a 46-year-old man originally from south Wales living in Monkstown, Cork, was caught in a sting operation by vigilante paedophile hunters on 26 July 2019 when he went to meet what he believed was a 14-year-old girl at a Costa Coffee café in Bishopstown, Cork. He had been in contact with an adult decoy posing as the girl from 4 to 26 July 2019, sending pictures of his genitalia and arranging for her to travel to Ireland for sex. Bowen was arrested, made a full admission, and was charged with two counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a child. He pleaded guilty at Cork District Court on 16 March 2022 and was sent to Cork Circuit Court for sentencing, which was adjourned to allow him to complete the Safer Lives programme. On 14 June 2023, Judge Helen Boyle sentenced him to 18 months in prison, with the final two years of a three-and-a-half-year sentence suspended.
