Tiago Damasceno Sousa, a 39-year-old Brazilian former professional soccer player, was arrested after a 19-year-old woman was raped at knifepoint in her home in west Cork between 7am and 9am on 29 March 2024. Gardaí arrested him the same day, and he later pleaded guilty to raping her. On 27 February 2026 Judge Siobhan Lankford jailed him for nine years at the Central Criminal Court in Cork, backdating the sentence to 29 March 2024.
