    Thomas Purcell of Ballyfrunk, Kilmanagh, Kilkenny, was driving a Volkswagen Caddy van on the night of 12 June 2021 when he passed a garda checkpoint at Haggards Green on the N77 Callan bypass without slowing and was stopped about 2km further at Prologue, Callan. He was initially charged with dangerous driving but convicted of the lesser charge of careless driving at Kilkenny District Court, and did not contest the drink driving charge. A urine sample showed 219mgs of alcohol per 100mls after he failed to provide a second breath sample. He was fined €500 for careless driving, €750 for drink driving, and disqualified from driving for three years.
