  Thomas O'Rourke, a 73-year-old retired garda sergeant from Kilmacanogue, Co Wicklow, engaged in sexualised online chats with a 13-year-old girl on the Lycos Chat platform between July and October 2017. The girl was an undercover officer in a covert operation by police in south Wales, and Europol alerted Gardaí to the case in September 2017. A search of O'Rourke's home in February 2018 found no child pornography among 123,806 images and videos on his devices. On 15 June 2022, O'Rourke pleaded guilty at Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court to two counts of production of child pornography and two counts of using ICT for the sexual exploitation of a child. Judge Patrick Quinn adjourned the hearing to a date in November for sentencing after the Probation Service re-offending assessment was changed from low to moderate.
