On 4 March 2015, a 43-year-old man, Alan Luukas, jumped into the back of a taxi in Moville, County Donegal, and pretended to have a gun, forcing driver Thomas Lake and passenger Danny Murphy to drive 18 miles across the Border to Derry. The victims reported the incident to gardaí the following day, but for six years there was no sign of Luukas despite attempts to contact him at his address in Derry. He was arrested on 2 July 2021 following a public order incident in Moville. In May 2022, Luukas was sentenced at Letterkenny Circuit Court to two and a half years for hijacking and false imprisonment, with a concurrent one-year sentence for threatening a garda, backdated to his custody in July 2021.
