On 17 August 2024, a man threatened an off-duty member of An Garda Síochána on Mallow Street in Limerick city centre and then drove his car at him. Thomas Kiely, aged 32, of Sycamore Heights, Patrickswell, Co. Limerick, was charged with five counts of dangerous driving, not having insurance and driving without a licence. Kiely was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for dangerous driving, to be added to a Circuit Court sentence imposed in July, and was given a 10-year driving disqualification. On 21 September 2026, Judge Catherine Ryan jailed him and backdated the sentence to when he first entered custody.

Thomas Kiely (31), a man from Patrickswell, County Limerick, is charged with endangerment and dangerous driving after allegedly driving a car at 190km/h on the N20 near Croom twice in August 2024, on the wrong side of the road with all lights off, and accelerating towards a Garda patrol jeep. Detective Garda Dean Landers took evasive action when the vehicle accelerated at the patrol jeep. Kiely was remanded in custody at Limerick District Court in August 2025 after being put out of court for calling the detective a 'f****** liar'. He was further remanded in custody in September 2025 for a book of evidence from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
