Thomas Harty, a 59-year-old man from Limerick city, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman in her mid-twenties on a Limerick city bus on 21 July 2017. The victim was waiting outside Dunnes Stores in the city centre at 7.55pm when Harty, who appeared drunk and was carrying a bag of cans, sat beside her despite vacant seats and grabbed her between the legs and vagina. He was formally arraigned at Limerick Circuit Court on 2 November 2021, where a bench warrant was vacated after he attended late, and Judge Patrick Meghen set a sentencing date for early 2022. In August 2022, Harty was sentenced to 12 months in prison with six months suspended.
