On 21 February 2019, gardaí said a 31-year-old man, Thomas Hanrahan, from County Dublin was seen residing in a car in Newbridge, Co Kildare, during what they described as a drug exchange with the driver. He was charged under Section 3 and Section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977, and pleaded guilty to the offence, according to his defence barrister. On 1 February 2024 at Naas District Court, substitute Judge Fiona Brennan imposed a three-month custodial sentence for the Section 15 offence, suspended for 12 months, and took the Section 3 offence into consideration. The sentence was reported on 6 February 2024, when gardaí told the court he has 81 previous convictions, 75 of them for road traffic offences.
