  • Driver sentenced for careless driving in Ballymahon Careless driving · Co. Offaly

On 7 January 2021, Katie Reilly, 22, of Loughanstown, Rathowen, Co Westmeath, was driving at Ballyreaghan, Ballymahon, Co Offaly, when she tried to overtake a car while two vehicles were approaching in the opposite direction. The road had sleet and slush, and she swerved three or four times, almost losing control, as witnessed by off-duty garda superintendent, Superintendent Boyle. She was charged with careless driving and appeared at Longford District Court, where the defence noted she had spent the previous night in hospital on vigil with an ill person. Judge John Brennan fined her €500 and declined to impose a driving disqualification, warning she would face one on any future similar charge.
