A fire gutted the former Shipwright pub on Thorncastle Street, Ringsend, Dublin 4, around 2am on 31 December 2023, and Gardaí confirmed it was arson believed to be far-right motivated. The building was being readied by the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive to house homeless families, though false rumours had circulated that it would house asylum seekers. Three people were arrested on 8 February 2024 and released without charge. Steven McDonnell, 49, a man from Cambridge Park, Ringsend, was subsequently charged with causing damage by fire under section 2 of the Criminal Damage Act, with alleged damage exceeding €2m. He appeared at Dublin District Court on 21 March 2024, denied the charge, was released on bail, and the DPP directed trial on indictment at the Circuit Court.
