latest first- Yacht club member avoids jail for assault during billiards game in Dún Laoghaire Assault causing harm · Co. Dublin
On 29 September 2023 at the Royal St George Yacht Club in Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin, Steven Gillman (70) punched a fellow club member, a 70-year-old man, repeatedly to the face and twice more after he had fallen, after Gillman felt the victim had belittled his refereeing in a billiards game. Gardaí interviewed Gillman after the victim reported the incident. At a court hearing in July 2024, Gillman pleaded guilty to one count of assault causing harm, the judge required a probation report, and the case was adjourned to 24 November 2024. At the sentencing reported on 25 November 2024, Judge Elma Sheahan set a headline sentence of three years, reduced it to two years and suspended it in its entirety, so Gillman avoided a jail term.
