Stephen Smyth, a 39-year-old man from Dundalk, was charged with being intoxicated in a public place and using threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour after he became irate with gardai on Hoey's Lane on 20 June 2021. He was cycling on the footpath when gardai, who had concerns the bicycle may have been stolen, planned to search him for drugs, prompting him to verbally abuse them. The case was heard at Dundalk District Court, where Judge Eirinn McKiernan applied the Probation Act and directed that €300 go to the Garda Benevolent Fund.
