Cases
latest first- DPP appeal rejected in Dublin firearms possession case Unlawful possession of a firearm · Co. Dublin
Two semi-automatic firearms, loaded with 15 rounds of 9mm Luger ammunition, were found inside a vacuum cleaner at the home of Stephen O'Connor, a 45-year-old man from Donaghmede, Dublin, on 7 September 2019. A gangland figure had stashed the weapons at his address during a period of significant gangland activity in Dublin city. O'Connor pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of firearms under section 27A(1) of the Firearms Act 1964, and Judge Elma Sheahan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court imposed a four-year sentence suspended in its entirety. The DPP appealed on grounds of undue leniency, but on 2 December 2021 the Court of Appeal refused to quash the sentence, finding O'Connor's mental health difficulties placed the case in a very exceptional category.
