Karl Jess, a man from Ballyfermot, Dublin, reported as aged 35 or 45, made Stephen Kennedy, a vulnerable man of lower than average cognitive ability, believe they were in a romantic relationship. Between August and November 2023, Jess induced Kennedy to pay him 10 instalments totalling €25,350 at his home. Gardaí became aware of the case when Kennedy's brother Damien Kennedy made a report, and obtained WhatsApp messages showing repeated requests for cash. Jess pleaded guilty to four counts of making gain by deception at Dublin Circuit Court. On 24 February 2025, Judge Martin Nolan sentenced him to two years and nine months' imprisonment.
