latest first- Murder appeal judgment reserved in Portlaw case Murder · Co. Waterford
Stephen Keane, 33, was found guilty in May 2021 of murdering John Lowe, 60, at Lowe's home in Portlaw, County Waterford, on 13 December 2018, when a fatal blow struck an artery under Lowe's left ear. Keane was interviewed by gardaí on two occasions on the day of the killing and three the following day, and he pleaded guilty to manslaughter but not guilty to murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and has since appealed, with his lawyers arguing that his admissions to gardaí should not have been admitted as evidence because he was intoxicated and without legal advice. The Court of Appeal heard the appeal on 8 June 2023 and reserved judgment to 15 June.
