Phelim Coady, a man aged 24, was driving a 1995 Toyota Starlet in Garrykennedy, Co Tipperary on 30 June 2019 while intoxicated on alcohol and cannabis and without insurance when the crash killed his friend Stephen Gleeson, a man aged 21. Three other occupants, including Coady, were uninjured. Coady pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and driving a dangerously deficient vehicle and was sentenced in October 2020. The DPP appealed the sentence as unduly lenient, and on 18 October 2021 the Court of Appeal quashed the original sentence but imposed a new two-year term suspended for three years.
