On Wednesday 6 August 2025 a man was stabbed and struck on the head with a hatchet at Peter McVerry House on the New Cabra Road in Dublin, in an attack the sources link to a €100 debt. Stephen Crosbie, a man aged 43 in one report and 44 in another, was arrested in Smithfield Square, Dublin 7 on Friday 8 August 2025 after a handgun and ammunition were recovered in a Garda search, and was charged with assault causing harm, threats to kill, and possession of a flick knife and a hatchet. Judge Cephas Power refused him bail at Dublin District Court and he was remanded in custody. A sentencing hearing at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, reported in April 2026, imposed a headline sentence of nine years reduced to six, with the final six months suspended on conditions, backdated to August 2025.
