A man wearing a makeshift balaclava entered the post office on High Street in Kilkenny City at about 3.30pm on 12 September 2023, brandished a hammer, struck a customer in his late 20s, and took just over €1,700 from staff. Stephen Clifford, a 38-year-old man, was arrested a few hundred metres from the scene shortly after and charged with robbery, assault causing harm, and producing an article capable of inflicting serious injury. He entered an early guilty plea and was sentenced at Kilkenny Circuit Court in July 2024 to six and a half years for robbery, with the final two and a half years suspended, and three and a half years for assault, with the final year and a half suspended.
