Stephen Buckley, a 48-year-old man from Ballyseedy, Tralee, Co Kerry, pleaded guilty to possessing four AI-generated photographic images and three anime videos depicting sexual acts with teenagers, in a charge dated 2 February 2024. The case came to light after the US Center for Missing and Exploited Children alerted detectives in the Garda Online Exploitation Unit in Dublin to suspicious activity on his phone. At Tralee District Court, Judge David Waters described the offence as serious and recorded a conviction, noting that downloading the material showed an element of deliberation and premeditation. Buckley was fined €400, with recognisances fixed in the event of an appeal. He is believed to be the first person in Ireland convicted of possessing AI-generated child pornographic material.
