latest first- Judge warns attempted murder convict could be released without supervision after Supreme Court ruling Attempted murder · Co. Dublin
On 23 December 2017 in Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin, a man who was 15 at the time met Stephanie Ng through an online dating app, where he had pretended to be 19. He lured her to an isolated area at the Sea Front, where he choked her to unconsciousness and slashed her neck with a knife. In 2019 he pleaded guilty to attempting to murder her and was sentenced to eleven years with a review after five; the Court of Appeal later found the review unduly lenient and increased it by two years. On 24 March 2025 Mr Justice Paul McDermott warned that a recent Supreme Court ruling could allow the now 23-year-old to be released without supervision, and the matter was listed for mention again on 4 April 2025 before the Central Criminal Court.
