Joshua Shiel, 25, of Loughrea, was convicted of dangerous driving at Galway District Court for a late-night crash at the Briarhill junction on the N6 Bothar na dTreabh in Galway on 22 August 2020. Stephanie Bell was stopped at the traffic lights in her Toyota Yaris when Shiel's Volkswagen Golf struck her car, spinning it completely around. An independent witness testified that Shiel drove through a red light, while Shiel told the court the light had turned green and he was swerving to avoid another vehicle. Judge Fahy fined Shiel €500, disqualified him from driving for two years, and ordered him to pay witness expenses, with leave to appeal the verdict granted.
