Cases
latest first- Man convicted and fined for deception at Penney's in Dundalk Making gain or causing loss by deception · Co. Louth
Stefan Covaci, 45, of Glenwood, Dundalk, was convicted of making gain or causing loss by deception after removing reduced price stickers from items and placing them on full-priced goods at Penney's in The Marshes Shopping Centre, Dundalk, on 28 August 2020. A security guard observed him acting suspiciously around 6pm and saw him move stickers from the reduction area onto two or three full-priced items. The defence argued that CCTV footage, which was no longer available due to a technical issue, had to be proved as evidence under a Supreme Court ruling, and that the cashier had not identified the defendant. Judge Máire Conneely was satisfied the accused had been identified and, following a contested hearing at Dundalk District Court in March 2022, imposed a €250 fine and fixed recognizance in the event of an appeal.
