Caitlin Corcoran, a woman who was 19 at the time, gave birth to a full-term baby girl in a toilet at Caredoc medical centre in Waterford in April 2018 and placed the newborn in a bin, where the baby was found dead several hours later. The baby, named Sophie Elizabeth Corcoran, was born healthy and had breathed after birth. Corcoran was convicted unanimously of manslaughter and by majority of child neglect at Waterford Circuit Criminal Court in October 2021. In July 2022, Judge Eugene O'Kelly sentenced the now 23-year-old to three months' imprisonment with three years suspended for both offences.
