    A car collision at Sheastown, Wellingtonbridge, Co Wexford at approximately 6:20am on 8 July 2026 injured three teenage passengers, one male and two female. Fourteen-year-old Sophie Caulfield, from New Ross, died in Temple Street Children's Hospital, Dublin, on 17 July 2026 after suffering a stroke and being declared brain dead. Martin McCarthy, 19, of Enniscorthy, was arrested and charged with nine offences including dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop, theft of a motor vehicle, driving without insurance, and criminal damage. He appeared before Wexford District Court on 9 September 2026, where a Garda executed an arrest warrant for breaching a bail condition of signing on at his local station. The nine charges were adjourned to 8 December 2026 for directions from the DPP.
