Avril O'Brien, a 51-year-old woman, stole €80,000 from the Loreto playgroup in Tallaght, Dublin, between October 2013 and March 2016. The playgroup director, Sister Teresa McCullagh, said the theft left the centre struggling to pay staff wages and bills. On 3 November 2021, Judge Martin Nolan sentenced her to three years' imprisonment with the final 18 months suspended on conditions including payment of €12,000 to the playgroup within a month.
