Sister Philomena Lyons, an Irish woman aged 68, was sexually assaulted and strangled with her own scarf on 15 December 2001 on the grounds of the Sacred Heart Convent in Ballybay, Monaghan. Kealen Herron, an Irish man who was 19 at the time, was taken to the Garda station four days later after his fingerprints matched those on the victim's glasses, and he confessed to the murder while under caution. He pleaded guilty in 2003 and received a mandatory life sentence. The Parole Board has now given him a release date of October 2026, though he may be released as early as May 2026, and he has been on temporary day release from Arbour Hill Prison for the past year.
