Alan O'Connor, a 38-year-old Defence Forces member, was found guilty by a Central Criminal Court jury in November 2024 of raping Siobhan Murphy, his partner's long-term friend, at a property in Portarlington, Co Laois, on 17 June 2020. The victim, who was asleep in a bed when O'Connor got in beside her, made a complaint to gardaí the following day after messaging him. On 17 January 2025, Mr Justice Kerida Naidoo sentenced O'Connor to five and a half years in prison, with the final six months suspended for two years, after setting a headline sentence of seven and a half years. O'Connor maintains his innocence and does not accept the jury's verdict.
