On the morning of 4 December 2016, Sinéad Roche, a 43-year-old taxi driver, struck 77-year-old woman Margaret Rooney on Sundrive Road, Crumlin, Dublin, and drove away before returning to the scene. Rooney suffered serious head and ankle injuries and later developed dementia. Roche was charged with careless driving causing serious bodily harm and with failing to offer assistance, failing to stay at the scene, and failing to report to gardaí, and pleaded not guilty to all counts. In February 2022 the trial collapsed when Judge Elma Sheahan ruled there was insufficient evidence for the careless driving charge and the return to circuit court was invalid. In December 2025, Roche was sentenced to a suspended term of two years and three months and a 12-month driving ban for failing to offer assistance.
