Two Westmeath brothers, John Owens, 72, and Martin Owens, 66, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting teenage girls aged 14 to 17 who were babysitting for their children on dates in 1994, 1995 and 1996. John Owens was sentenced to eight years in February 2026 after pleading guilty to nine counts, and Martin Owens was sentenced to five years and six months in July 2026 after pleading guilty to six counts. The victims, Deirdre Boylan, Lorraine Kiernan, 44, and Sinead Nally, waived their right to anonymity, allowing the brothers to be publicly identified for the first time. Some incidents took place in Trabolgan, Co Cork, during a family holiday.
