On 20 February 2024, Patrick Carroll, then 19, was driving a car on the N69 at Ballyengland, Askeaton, Co Limerick, after drinking in two pubs in Kildimo, when the vehicle crossed to the other side of the road and crashed into a wall, killing passengers Darragh Dullea, 20, from Clonakilty, Co Cork, and Cillian Kirwan, 19, from Piltown, Co Kilkenny. All four occupants were students at Salesian Agricultural College, Pallaskenry, and Carroll's blood alcohol level was almost three times the legal limit.
