• Court of Appeal rejects sentence appeal in rural Ireland rape case Rape

  Sinead, a 42-year-old woman, spoke publicly on Liveline in April 2022 about a rape that occurred when she was 18 in a town in rural Ireland, after consuming about three alcopops at a nightclub. The abuse, which began when the victim was 10, continued between September 1999 and May 2011 and took place in the man's house and a garden shed the victim believed was built for that purpose. The man, now 67, was sentenced to twelve-and-a-half years with four years suspended at Sligo Circuit Criminal Court in November 2020 after pleading guilty to 23 counts of sexual assault. The Court of Appeal rejected his bid to have the sentence reduced in April 2022, and Sinead has contacted the Gardaí about the incident.
