Cases
latest first- Appeal dismissed in Donegal rape and sexual assault case Rape; sexual assault · Co. Donegal
Shaun O'Donnell, 35, was found guilty by a jury at the Central Criminal Court of one count of rape and one count of sexual assault after he climbed into bed and raped a woman as she slept beside her boyfriend and newborn baby at a home in Donegal on 26 March 2021. He had stayed over for drinks the previous evening and the judge described the offence as opportunistic and committed on impulse. In August 2024, Mr Justice David Keane sentenced him to eight years for rape and a concurrent two years and eight months for sexual assault, with no part suspended. In December 2025, Ms Justice Nuala Butler dismissed his appeal, which had argued that a bra and sanitary pad worn by the victim should have been available for DNA testing.
