Sharon Mooney, a 32-year-old woman and garda since 2006, was assaulted by a belligerent prisoner (described as a pensioner in one report) while on duty at Cobh Garda Station in Cork on 6 December 2015, sustaining injuries to her right wrist, shoulder and elbow. The injuries developed into chronic pain syndrome requiring surgery for a spinal cord stimulator, and she was discharged from the Garda on medical grounds in 2022. She sued the Minister for Public Expenditure under the Garda Compensation Acts, and the High Court, with Judge Leonie Reynolds presiding, awarded her €458,526 in damages and losses. The minister had argued that no significant acute injuries were caused and that pre-existing conditions explained much of her presentation.
