A violent public order incident occurred at William Street, Tullamore, Offaly, on Sunday 11 July 2021 at around 11.30pm, fuelled by excessive drinking. A garda, Shane Costello, was assaulted and hospitalised with non-life-threatening facial injuries. Three men were arrested and released without charge, and a file was prepared for the DPP. In March 2022, Shane O'Toole (24), David O'Toole (25) and Oisin Rice (21) were sent for trial at Tullamore Circuit Court, where they pleaded guilty to violent disorder, with Rice additionally admitting to assaulting Costello causing him harm. In December 2022, the judge ordered substantial compensation payments and adjourned the cases sine die with a view to leaving all three without conviction under the Probation Act.
