  Shane O'Brien, a 43-year-old man, was charged with assault after an incident involving a 71-year-old man at Maddoxland, Riverstown, Louth, on 9 May 2023. The complainant said the defendant punched him in the face at the door of his home, while his wife said the defendant struck him twice on the right side of his face. O'Brien pleaded not guilty, represented himself, and was convicted after a contested hearing at Dundalk District Court by Judge Nicola Andrews. He was sentenced to four months, reported in July 2025, and has since appealed the sentence.

  On 29 June 2019, Shane O'Brien, a 40-year-old man from Baltinglass, County Wicklow, overtook another man on a narrow country road at Walterstown in Nurney, County Kildare, and a heated argument followed after the back of his car was hit. Dashcam footage of the exchange was shown at Naas District Court on 2 March 2023, where O'Brien contested the charge but Judge Desmond Zaidan found him at fault beyond reasonable doubt. On 9 March 2023, the judge convicted O'Brien of careless driving and fined him €500, also ordering him to donate €6,000 to charity. The injured party did not wish to make a complaint about an alleged assault or theft.
