Shane McGovern, 31, met an 18-year-old man outside a bar in Monaghan on 20 May 2022 and offered him a place to stay at his home in Mullaghmatt, where he raped him. The victim, a resident in a care home, went to bed fully clothed and woke to find McGovern raping him, and immediately reported the incident to gardaí. McGovern was arrested in June 2022 and pleaded guilty to a charge of anal rape. In November 2024, the Central Criminal Court sentenced him to five years in prison with the final 12 months suspended, conditional on engaging with the Probation Service for two years.
