Shane Corrigan, a 53-year-old man of Newton Court, Belcamp Lane, Coolock, Dublin, exchanged messages with a fictional 13-year-old decoy profile between 24 and 28 December 2018. The profile was set up by a group trying to catch people grooming children, and the messages included explicit questions and a proposal to meet at a hotel. Gardaí obtained a search warrant for his house on 29 December 2018, and analysis of the seized media showed no evidence of child pornography. Corrigan was arrested on 2 September 2022, pleaded guilty to using information technology to facilitate the sexual exploitation of a child, and on 7 February 2024 Judge Martin Nolan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court sentenced him to three years in prison with the final 20 months suspended on strict conditions.
