On 24 July 2023 gardaí arrested Sergiu Cristian Lingurar, a 25-year-old Romanian man and US Green Card holder, at Shannon Airport in Co Clare, after he allegedly presented a false passport for a 13-year-old Romanian boy so the boy could enter the United States. On 25 July Ennis District Court refused him bail on flight-risk grounds and remanded him in custody, and on 26 July he was remanded for a further 13 days, with a bail application expected in the High Court. He is charged under section 29 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001. On 15 November 2023 at Ennis District Court, Judge Alec Gabbett imposed a two-month prison term, backdated to 25 July, and a €500 fine.
