Derek Nagle, a 56-year-old former Naval Service member from Co Cork, was convicted of sexually assaulting Seana O'Connor, a female naval recruit in her twenties, at Haulbowline Naval Base in Cork on 1 March 2022. He slapped her on the buttocks and pushed her forward while she was in the male living accommodation at the base. O'Connor reported the incident to a superior officer the same day and military police launched an investigation. Nagle pleaded guilty earlier in 2023, and on 30 May 2023 Judge Marion O'Leary at Cork District Court put him on a 12-month probation bond with a €300 bond.
