On 4 May 2024, Garda Sean Shields chased two masked men on scrambler bikes from Dublin's North inner city to a cul de sac in Belvedere Avenue, Dublin 1, in an incident deemed to be dangerous driving. Shields denied the charge, telling the court the bikes came out of nowhere, while witness Kieran Davitt, 50, of Belvedere Avenue, said the garda car seemed to go out of control. Shields was convicted and barred from driving for two years, and has lodged notice to appeal. Davitt, who gave key evidence against Shields, had previously pleaded guilty to possession of a stolen motorbike.
