Sean Higgins, a 74-year-old man from Ballinvana, Kilmallock, County Limerick, was jailed for two years in November 2025 after pleading guilty to fraud by deception. He allegedly deceived a woman in her 80s out of her life savings of more than €73,000 between 2007 and 2016, telling her for almost 20 years that her money was tied up in investment bonds. Gardaí arrested Higgins in 2020 following a formal complaint, and he was charged with 13 offences under the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001. The judge set a headline sentence of four years, reduced to two years after mitigation for his previous good character and lack of previous convictions.
