Laura Connolly, a 34-year-old woman from Lifford, was struck and killed by a white Citroen Berlingo van on the N15 at Townspark, Lifford, Co Donegal, at around 2.45am on 11 July 2021. Sean Connaughton, a 54-year-old man from Dundalk, Co Louth, presented himself at Letterkenny Garda Station the following day and was arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. He was charged with dangerous driving causing death, failing to remain at the scene, driving without insurance, and driving without a licence, to which he pleaded guilty at Letterkenny Circuit Court in May 2026. Connaughton was sentenced to five years in prison and banned from driving for 15 years.

Sean Connaughton, 50, a man from Dundalk, County Louth, was charged with assaulting a man at the Banjo Tavern in Castlefin, Donegal, on 23 September 2019. He is the former licensee of the premises. In February 2022, Connaughton pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay €5,500 compensation to his victim, and was separately fined €250 for driving without insurance and €100 for driving without a licence after being stopped at a Cloughfin checkpoint in April 2020. In February 2023, the compensation payment hearing was adjourned to 17 April 2023, with the judge suggesting he borrow from family to pay the sum.
